Learn some gun safety

blew a hole straight through our wall

versión en español a continuación

After our run-in with Willie B., we lived in fear. I know better, but when you wake up and find someone prowling about in your house at about 2 a.m., it does something to you.

There had been no signs of forcible entry, so we now assume that we left the side door that led to the deck unlocked, and that is how Willie got in. He wasn't armed. He apparently only wanted to steal some things and leave.

He was scared to death when the guns were facing his direction. He kept saying, "peace, man, you are going to kill me. You need to call some relatives."

Now that he was gone, we never heard anything else about him. He was on probation when he entered our house and went back to jail.

A good friend from college was a farm boy from east Georgia. He had a five-shot Remington Sweet 16 gauge shotgun. He loaned us his gun for our protection. So I down had my old 410 shotgun and his beautiful 16 gauge.

We can't remember the order of events that happened so many years ago, but it went something like this.

One night my best friend and his wife were over at the house. He was a city boy and maybe a little nervous about me having that gun loaded and in the corner as I waited on the next thief to break in. He was probably right.

So one evening, I showed his wife and him how safe the gun was even though I had a round in the chamber. Betty and our friends were sitting on the bed. I proceeded to pick up the gun and point it towards the wall to prove it wouldn't go off because the safety was on.

Oh boy! I pulled the trigger, and it blew a hole straight through our wall, and we could hear pellets hitting the tin roof of our neighbor's outdoor carport below us.

You know it took years to live that stupid mistake down. I had aggravated Betty, and my friend was mocking me horribly. They had every right to do so.

I am unsure how long before this happened, but we believe that Betty and our friend's wife were pregnant when I proved my stupidity.

I was at the hospital when my friend's oldest boy was born. It had been a horrible day. His boy was born without fully developed lungs. We prayed for his son to live as we had never prayed in our young lives.

God answered prayer, and soon, we saw the improvement. When it got late, and I left the hospital, I told my friend to come with me and spend the night at our house.

His house was a way out in the country at a church he was pastoring. He said no; if he wanted to rest, he would leave his wife and son and just go home.

It was 2 or 3 a.m. again, and suddenly, my friend was beating on the door. He woke us up, so I grabbed the shotgun. I was still living in fear.

You know I have not been the wisest with my gun-handling skills. I headed to the door screaming who are you, and what do you want.

Remember he had told me he would go home and not come to my house. My friend began yelling, "it is me. I am not Willie, so put down the gun and open the door."

I calmed down, opened the door, and finally, we got some sleep.

Over the next bit, God taught me the error of living in fear. Yes, bad things can happen to you and around you, but we can trust that God will take care of us.

I put the gun in a much more safe place. I was far more careful and even pulled the nails out of the windows and doors. I stuffed rags and newspaper in the large hole in the bedroom wall and prayed to forget my stupidity.

Having someone break into your home will change you. You feel violated. You feel vulnerable. We learned that God would take care of us. In later years we would be robbed dozens of times. We never got used to it.

The thing to learn is that you never find security in an alarm system, a guard dog, or a weapon. I am for all three, but absolute security is when you trust God. You know that He holds your tomorrow when you lay down your head. He will take care of your family. That is absolute security.

Living in a foreign country can be scary. There are noises and sounds you have never heard. There is movement, sights, and sounds that mess with your mind. Trust that God who lives in you will take care of you. You must learn to pray yourself happy.

Fill your mind with Scripture truth. Turn away from fear spreaders. Fear is contagious; many times, the other expatriates will cause you to fear. Do not fall into that trap.

The Day Finally Came

No estaba armado. Aparentemente solo quería robar algunas cosas e irse.

Mi amigo comenzó a gritar: "Soy yo.

Gratitude, a sentiment often tucked away in the recesses of our hearts, possesses the transformative power to enrich not only our lives but also the lives of those around us.

In January of 1987 Betty, the kids, and I arrived in Querétaro, Mexico to study Spanish. I literally didn’t know ten words. I am forever indebted to Georgia, Hermana Luisa, Webb for the language institute she ran for many years. She was strict. She pushed hard. Betty cried on more than one occasion. Without the challenge I know that I never would have learned the language. The language school gave me structure, discipline, help learning what to do next. Read the rest of the letter then go watch this video the BBF did of Miss Webb. When you get this letter, Lord willing, Betty and I will be in Mexico and we will be visiting this wonderful godly lady. I thought of this lady often over the years. I remembered how hard she had been on me. I remembered being tortured it seemed but I survived Hermana Luisa and she made me a thriving missionary. Thank you Hermana Luisa for helping a red neck Tennessee hillbilly learn enough Spanish to do some ministry. God bless you. So know that language school might be very beneficial for you. Efficient Resource Utilization: Organized lesson plans and materials ensure learners make the most of their study time, covering essential language elements in a coherent manner. Clear Learning Objectives: Well-organized courses outline clear learning objectives, helping learners understand what to expect and what is expected of them. Resource Accessibility: Organized language schools provide learners with easy access to a variety of resources, including textbooks, multimedia materials, and language software.
