We needed a mentor

Would you consider loving young people and helping them make the right decisions?

versión en español a continuación

Betty loved being married, even if it was to me. Remember, she wanted to be Miss Susie Homemaker or Betty Crocker. She was now both. Betty was the queen of her little mansion.

We had it made. Her parents gave us a king-size bed, two twin beds, and a washing machine. They loaned us all the other furniture we needed.

My parents bought us a dryer and deep freezer. We were set and living the dream from the very beginning.

Betty got a $4750 check for her pain and suffering from the insurance company due to the accident she had in high school. Big mistake. Lots of money, two foolish young people in love.

The minimum wage of $65 a week, meaning that the settlement equaled about 73 weeks of minimum wage. What did two fine young people do with all that money?

We tithed, bought a used Chevrolet Camaro, and lived. We slowly went through all that money. They used to say, those who have it have it to lose. We spent the capital till it was gone.

We were both still in college. It was the first semester of our Sophomore year. Betty was not interested in going to college. She was going out of duty and with respect for her parents.

Betty got the degree she wanted, her MRS. Degree. I loved college. I was busy with school, work after school, and at the new church.

More excited than you would ever believe. I loved teaching the Bible. The young people at this church loved the Bible. They loved learning.

God gave me an incredible group there, also. I had a young couples class on Sunday mornings, and it multiplied. On Sunday evenings, we had Training Union, kind of like evening Sunday School.

On Monday nights, we met for prayer. The first time we went, there were only two young people: the pastor's daughter and another girl. Within months we had 75 or 80 young people.

Living the dream headed towards whatever God had for us. Betty showed less and less interest in school. Betty's dad was paying her tuition.

She called him and said daddy; I want you to save your money. I do not want to be in college. I prefer to be a housewife.

Mr. Ferguson relented begrudgingly. He wanted his children to graduate from college. He knew Betty was happy, and that was enough for him.

I know that is wild to many of you, but Betty was cooking, sewing, cleaning, helping in the youth group, and being the most incredible wife anyone could ever dream of having.

Later, Mr. Ferguson and I rode somewhere, and he asked me how much the money had yielded. I regretfully told him that it had not made anything. We had spent it all.

All he did was tell me how disappointed he was. If only we had invested the money in the stock market. It would have significantly increased. We had wasted a windfall.

The story of much of my life has been that I needed a mentor. I needed someone to help me make better decisions.

I didn't know how to handle getting engaged, planning a wedding, planning a honeymoon, and had now blown it managing an investment that could have made a difference in our lives.

I step aside from our story to tell you that it would have made a tremendous difference if we had had someone to mentor us. I needed someone in my life as a college freshman. We needed marriage counseling. We needed help with how to handle unexpected money.

Would you consider loving young people and helping them make the right decisions?

Our first ministry

Gratitude, a sentiment often tucked away in the recesses of our hearts, possesses the transformative power to enrich not only our lives but also the lives of those around us.

In January of 1987 Betty, the kids, and I arrived in Querétaro, Mexico to study Spanish. I literally didn’t know ten words. I am forever indebted to Georgia, Hermana Luisa, Webb for the language institute she ran for many years. She was strict. She pushed hard. Betty cried on more than one occasion. Without the challenge I know that I never would have learned the language. The language school gave me structure, discipline, help learning what to do next. Read the rest of the letter then go watch this video the BBF did of Miss Webb. When you get this letter, Lord willing, Betty and I will be in Mexico and we will be visiting this wonderful godly lady. I thought of this lady often over the years. I remembered how hard she had been on me. I remembered being tortured it seemed but I survived Hermana Luisa and she made me a thriving missionary. Thank you Hermana Luisa for helping a red neck Tennessee hillbilly learn enough Spanish to do some ministry. God bless you. So know that language school might be very beneficial for you. Efficient Resource Utilization: Organized lesson plans and materials ensure learners make the most of their study time, covering essential language elements in a coherent manner. Clear Learning Objectives: Well-organized courses outline clear learning objectives, helping learners understand what to expect and what is expected of them. Resource Accessibility: Organized language schools provide learners with easy access to a variety of resources, including textbooks, multimedia materials, and language software.
