It is not about the money

Never believe that you are the source

versión en español a continuación

Betty and I lived without a promised salary for nearly two years. In all that time, God took care of us. I have no idea how often we came home and found groceries on our steps.

One day I was in the office. Betty called and told me I had to pick Chris up at a friend's house. He had spent the night before at their house.

I told Betty that I couldn't go pick him up because I didn't have any gas in the car. She said look, it was you that said we would live this way and not tell anybody. If you insist, I will call them and tell them they must bring him back because we do not have gas money.

I got mad and asked her why she was trying to embarrass me. She said well, you said God would provide, so I am sure He will. I was doing the best I could.

I started yelling. I said I would drive as far as possible, then walk, but I will pick Chris up. We were not happy with each other at the moment. Money stress can strain a marriage.

I walked downstairs on my way to the car. Still hot under the collar, my volunteer secretary interrupted me. She said, hey, there was some money in your box. Do you want it now?

There I was, acting like a baby, yelling at my wife, and God had already prepared it all for me to go and pick up Chris. I told her that was an answer to prayer and took the money.

I don't think I told her of my small faith and bad attitude that I had shown just a few minutes earlier, but God was constantly meeting our needs.

I walked to and from church on numerous occasions. It was about a three-mile walk, but I needed to do so because we didn't have any money for gas. I told people I was doing it for exercise and that it made for a good prayer time.

I had been praying for a watch. God had shown Himself so many times and answered so many prayers. One day as I was walking to church, I was only about a half mile from the house on a busy road and saw a nearly new watch.

The watch was lying in the middle of the road. The band was intact, and the watch worked perfectly. There was no way to find out to who the watch belonged. I reached down, picked up the wristwatch, and wore it for a long time. God was meeting our needs in the craziest ways.

One Sunday morning, it was cold outside. Betty and I were talking, and there was no way we could pay our bills though they were minimal. We had paid all our bills up till this date.

I told her that I would go outside and pray. I went out behind the house at 8 am. I sat on a rock in my suit. I was crying out and praying to the Lord.

After quite a time freezing on the rock, I went in, and we went to church. I told the Lord that I had to have at least $100 that day or we would be unable to pay our bills. I begged Him. I told Him I had tried my best to honor Him, and I didn't want to make Him look bad.

A man walked up to me a little teary-eyed. He said preacher; I have something I have to give you. I acted all normal and said now you know you can't give that to me directly. You need to put it in the box, but I appreciate it.

He insisted. He said I do not know what happened, but at 8 am this very morning, I had the strongest impression that I had to give you $100 today. Here it is.

I was shocked. We had lived by faith for some time, but seeing God moving directly in another's life on our behalf impacted me. We had seen God do unbelievable things. My wife and children had learned to live with near nothing.

I had proven to myself and our little church that God does indeed hear and answer prayer. I had confirmed that God would and could take care of my family no matter where we were. We often didn't know where the next meal was coming from, but God would miraculously meet our needs.

The box was full that day. We had one of the best offerings that day that we got the entire time. Betty and I never kept anything from our children. They knew exactly what we were doing.

They had seen God answer prayer. They had seen God meet their needs. They were growing up expecting that God just does that.

That night after church, I told the family to load up, and we went to the grocery store. We walked into the store, and I took all three kids back to the ice cream section. I told them they all got to pick their favorite flavor in half a gallon of ice cream. We were going to celebrate.

We then went to the coke section, the soft drink section for you Yankees!! I told the kids to pick up their favorite coke, drink for you non-southerners.

I explained that in Philippians 4, Paul had said that he had learned to suffer need and to abound. I told them that they had been sweet and patient. They had gone through all this with us.

It wasn't Betty and Austin; it was all the family. I said now we are going to celebrate. God has superabundantly answered our prayers today.

We got to the counter. There were like 4 or 5 half gallons of different flavors of ice cream. There were several 64-ounce drinks. Those were the days before the 2-liter craze.

The lady said well, it looks like someone is having a party. There we were with our three small children and happy as larks. God had proven Himself over and over again.

Betty and I have been married for over 49 years, and I can tell you that we have proven the Lord. We have proven the Scriptures. God honors His Word. God meets needs. You can trust Him. He even likes it when you get your favorite ice cream and coke.

The lessons for me are this. Trusting God is hard. God never failed, but I failed in my faith regularly. It is a great story to reflect on, but those were very trying years, and I would not like to relive them.

God can touch others to give and meet needs. People are not the source of our funds; they are simply the conduit that God uses. God is the source. Everything comes from Him.

God cares about our most minor needs and wants. He is good to us. He is not a stingy God. He is not trying to take from you. He does want us to learn to trust Him, but He never mistreats us.

I know that you might read the story and try to find coincidences. You might think that I somehow hinted at what we wanted. I know you think I may have made up these stories or embellished them, but I promise that is not the case.

I challenge you to step out and trust God. Do not let money be the motivating or limiting factor. A businessman friend once told me that all people in the ministry are in it for the money. He said if you cut off the money, they will quit. He loved how many of the formerly enslaved people felt called to preach. They had said the sun is hot and cotton picking is hard. I believe the Lord is calling me to preach. I found that to be very insulting.

I can tell you that this is not the case with my family. They served in the hard times. They watched God meet their needs. Your pastor is serving God because he loves God and wants to see Him work.

Don't use money to control others. Don't be the guy who holds the purse strings and tries to manipulate others. Learn to give. Learn to trust God with your money.

Never believe that you are the source. Too often, we lift ourselves up and act like it is our money. We act like we do God a favor when we give. That is never the case. It is God that allows you to make money.

Money is never about you but about God. God gives, God takes away. Honor God. Be careful to seek God's things first and let God meet your other needs.

Empecé a gritar.

Todavía acalorado, mi secretaria voluntaria me interrumpió.

Me quedé impactado. Habíamos visto a Dios hacer cosas increíbles.

Íbamos a celebrar.

Honra a Dios.

In January of 1987 Betty, the kids, and I arrived in Querétaro, Mexico to study Spanish. I literally didn’t know ten words. I am forever indebted to Georgia, Hermana Luisa, Webb for the language institute she ran for many years. She was strict. She pushed hard. Betty cried on more than one occasion. Without the challenge I know that I never would have learned the language. The language school gave me structure, discipline, help learning what to do next. Read the rest of the letter then go watch this video the BBF did of Miss Webb. When you get this letter, Lord willing, Betty and I will be in Mexico and we will be visiting this wonderful godly lady. I thought of this lady often over the years. I remembered how hard she had been on me. I remembered being tortured it seemed but I survived Hermana Luisa and she made me a thriving missionary. Thank you Hermana Luisa for helping a red neck Tennessee hillbilly learn enough Spanish to do some ministry. God bless you. So know that language school might be very beneficial for you. Efficient Resource Utilization: Organized lesson plans and materials ensure learners make the most of their study time, covering essential language elements in a coherent manner. Clear Learning Objectives: Well-organized courses outline clear learning objectives, helping learners understand what to expect and what is expected of them. Resource Accessibility: Organized language schools provide learners with easy access to a variety of resources, including textbooks, multimedia materials, and language software.
